Gemini Takes Over the Living Room: Google TV Gets a Massive AI Upgrade

Gemini Takes Over the Living Room: Google TV Gets a Massive AI Upgrade

Google just announced a major wave of AI features coming to Google TV. These updates bring more Gemini power directly to your living room. Along with these tools, you will soon see a new video feed on your home screen that brings YouTube Shorts into your TV experience.

At the heart of this update is the Gemini tab. Inside, a new “Create” button lets you play with generative AI tools called Nano Banana and Veo. These features are rolling out first on Gemini-enabled TCL TVs in the United States. Google plans to expand support to more devices later this year.

Create Images and Video from Your Couch

Nano Banana is an image-generation and editing model. It lets you change photos using simple voice commands. You can swap outfits, change backgrounds, or create entirely new scenes. Google wants this to be a fun, shared experience for the family. For example, you can tell the AI to make your dad wear a ridiculous outfit just to get a laugh.

Veo takes things a step further by letting you create video clips from scratch. You can also animate still images by describing what you want to see. You could ask for a video of your grandfather doing a moonwalk in space, and the AI will build it. This brings a high level of creative control to the biggest screen in your house.

Faster Searching and Smarter Slideshows

Google Photos is also getting a big boost on Google TV. New Gemini-powered search helps you find specific memories fast. You can ask to see photos from a past vacation or a birthday party without having to scroll through your entire library. The results appear in a format that makes it easy to view images full-screen or start a slideshow.

A new “Remix” feature lets you apply artistic styles to your photos, such as watercolor or oil painting effects. Meanwhile, “Dynamic Slideshows” introduces animated layouts and new color treatments. You can turn any Google Photos collection into a TV-ready slideshow by choosing Google Photos in your screensaver settings.

YouTube Shorts Move to the Big Screen

Google is leaning into the popularity of short-form video. Soon, a “Short videos for you” row will appear on the Google TV home screen. This row will start with content from YouTube Shorts. This move follows a recent change to the YouTube mobile app that lets users hide Shorts, suggesting that people have mixed feelings about the format on their phones.

By bringing Shorts to the TV, Google is trying to find new ways for people to enjoy this content. This follows a trend in the industry, as Instagram expanded its TV app to Google TV devices earlier this year. Google hints that this short-form feed could eventually include content from other platforms too.

This update shows how quickly AI is moving from our phones into every other device we own. Google is betting that your TV should be more than just a place to watch movies. They want it to be a creative hub where you can find memories and build new things using the latest AI tech.
