Orbital Code: SpaceX Seals Massive Buyout of Cursor Coding Assistant

Coding platform Cursor is now officially part of SpaceX. The popular programming assistant confirmed the final acquisition closure in an official update published on the Cursor blog.

Elon Musk’s aerospace giant SpaceX first set up a joint development agreement with Cursor back in April. That original deal included a buyout option allowing SpaceX to acquire the programming startup for $60 billion. Two months later, as SpaceX completed its transition into a publicly traded company, both teams confirmed they were moving forward with the full acquisition plan. The transaction marks another major expansion for SpaceX, which also folded Musk’s artificial intelligence firm xAI into its corporate operations earlier this year.

Cursor emphasized that joining SpaceX opens direct access to massive computing power. SpaceX maintains extensive hardware infrastructure, renting out server access to major software developers including Anthropic and Google. However, that rapid infrastructure growth brings local environmental scrutiny. SpaceX currently faces legal challenges regarding emissions and air pollution linked to gas turbines running at its data center sites.

Despite those regulatory hurdles, Cursor leadership pointed directly to hardware access as the main driver behind the deal. Joining SpaceX gives the software team access to the largest fleet of graphics processing units on the planet. Cursor representatives noted that SpaceX continues building out the raw processing power required to push software intelligence far beyond current industry limits. Joining the aerospace giant puts Cursor in a position to act as a primary interface where that massive computing capacity turns into practical, daily coding tools for developers.

The acquisition signals a broader shift in how major tech firms combine physical hardware infrastructure with developer tools. Building advanced software requires steady access to high-end processing chips and reliable power grids. By combining satellite communications, rocket engineering, server farms, and automated software tools under one roof, SpaceX secures total control over its technical pipeline.

For software developers using Cursor, joining SpaceX promises faster code generation and smoother processing for complex programming tasks. As hardware requirements for automated tools continue to skyrocket, having direct backing from a massive computing network gives Cursor a huge operational advantage over standalone competitors.

This deal also resets expectations across the software industry regarding what coding assistants need to survive long term. Independent coding tools often struggle to balance high API costs with subscription pricing. Relying on third-party cloud providers cuts into profit margins every time a developer runs complex queries or requests full codebase refactoring. By operating directly on top of dedicated server infrastructure, Cursor bypasses those middleman costs entirely.

Furthermore, integrating Cursor into SpaceX’s broader technical ecosystem opens up unique opportunities for specialized software development. Engineering teams building spaceflight software, satellite communication protocols, and autonomous launch systems demand extreme precision. Training coding agents on proprietary aerospace data allows Cursor to offer specialized suggestions that general-purpose coding tools cannot match.

As the race for developer tools intensifies, raw computing power and direct control over server hardware will separate winning platforms from forgotten tools. SpaceX’s massive buyout of Cursor proves that owning the underlying hardware infrastructure is just as important as writing the code itself.
