Power Surge: Nvidia Injects $1.5 Billion Into SoftBank Giant Data Center Deal

Nvidia announced Monday that it is committing $1.5 billion directly to SB Energy, a major data center developer closely tied to SoftBank and OpenAI. This strategic backing guarantees that Nvidia will act as the exclusive provider of computing hardware for OpenAI’s massive Ports-Pike data center facility located near Cincinnati, Ohio. Beyond the upfront cash investment, regulatory documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission show that Nvidia will supply up to $105 billion in credit to support physical construction. The facility plans to start at an initial output of 4.25 gigawatts and eventually expand up to 8 gigawatts in total processing capacity.

SB Energy relies on strong backing from both SoftBank and OpenAI. SoftBank previously held $5.8 billion in Nvidia equity before liquidating its shares last November to fund alternative computing projects.

To power this massive processing hub, SB Energy plans to construct a dedicated 9.2 gigawatt natural gas power plant right on site. The project sits on land managed by the U.S. Department of Energy, a location historically used to enrich uranium for naval submarines and nuclear weapons programs.

Building a dedicated power station carries a heavy price tag, with current construction estimates reaching $33 billion. That massive figure reflects a sharp 66 percent increase in gas plant construction expenses over the last two years alone. Once fully operational, the plant will compete directly with natural gas export markets, a demand surge that analysts predict could triple fuel prices in surrounding regional markets.

Securing dedicated energy sources has become the central challenge for hardware manufacturers and cloud operators alike. Modern processing clusters require continuous electrical power, pushing technology firms to buy or build dedicated power stations alongside server farms. By backing SB Energy directly, Nvidia guarantees that its hardware receives a steady, dedicated supply of electricity without depending entirely on public power grids.

This massive commitment also strengthens Nvidia’s hold on high-end hardware supply lines. Providing $105 billion in credit guarantees that OpenAI remains locked into Nvidia’s hardware ecosystem for years to come. That tight relationship blocks competing chipmakers from taking market share inside one of the largest computing facilities on the planet.

However, building dedicated natural gas facilities brings serious long-term financial and regulatory risks. Surging construction costs and potential spikes in local fuel prices could drive up operating costs for data center managers. Local communities and environmental regulators are also tracking these large power builds closely, raising concerns over air quality and regional grid stability.

Despite these hurdles, tech leaders are moving forward at full speed. By combining cash investments, equipment credit lines, and dedicated power generation, Nvidia secures both the physical power and the customer commitments it needs to dominate industrial-scale computing.
