Leaked code and internal media show that Apple’s camera-equipped earbuds might function very differently than typical spy gear. Security researcher Aaron Perris uncovered promotional video files inside the release candidate build of macOS 26.7 RC. The video shows a user wearing AirPods, holding up a physical book, and speaking directly to Siri.
A voiceover in the leaked footage explains that Visual Intelligence makes the world searchable. If you spot an interesting item, you can ask Siri to save the information for later. Internal code references also mention a Hair Detected notification, which warns users if long hair covers the earbud lenses and blocks outward visibility.
Apple carefully designed these tiny camera sensors to serve as visual inputs for Siri rather than tools for recording video. Reports from Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman confirm that these earbud lenses cannot record full video files or save high-resolution photos. Instead, low-resolution visual sensors sit on both the left and right earbuds, gathering real-time image data solely to feed Apple’s upgraded Siri voice assistant.
This design approach prevents the earbuds from turning into secret surveillance gear. When you wear these upgraded AirPods, you can look at a book cover, inspect cooking ingredients on a kitchen counter, or check street signs in a new city while asking Siri for immediate help. The software reads the visual surroundings instantly without storing permanent video files on the device.
By putting computer vision inside popular earbuds, Apple moves users toward a screen-free computing experience. Instead of pulling an iPhone out of your pocket every time you need information, you interact directly with your surroundings through voice commands and subtle camera sensors.
To address public privacy concerns, Apple added a physical LED indicator light that shines whenever the sensors process visual data. While some critics argue that tiny indicator lights remain hard to spot on small earbuds, adding a visual cue shows Apple’s commitment to user transparency.
